Eight Weeks in the Kitchen: Bolton Young Chefs of the Year

At Step Places, we build homes. But we have always believed that communities are not built from bricks alone. The key ingredients are the people, and especially the young people, as they hold the keys to the future.
That is why we are proud to be sponsoring the Bolton Young Chefs of the Year this year, part of the Bolton Food and Drink Festival. The competition brings together young people aged 11 to 17, split into two groups, one for 11 to 13 year olds and one for 14 to 17 year olds. Over eight weeks, each group works through a series of evening sessions with a professional chef, taking on a different set of skills and challenges every time.
What gets you is the range in the room. Some of these kids already know their way around a kitchen. Others are picking up a proper knife for the first time. A few weeks in, you genuinely cannot tell which is which. Give someone the space to try, get it wrong, and try again, and confidence grows faster than you would think.
The kitchen is a vital component in every home we build. It is really exciting for us to see these young people excited about cooking and about a space they will spend a substantial amount of their lives in.
It all builds towards the finale. The winners will be crowned on Saturday, 29th August, at 11 am, presented by James Martin (https://www.jamesmartinchef.co.uk/at) himself at his festival demo. Each winner takes home a pots and pans set and a personalised apron with their own name on it.
